How to prepare your home for your newborn

Having your first newborn is a quiet challenging task. No matter how many books you’ve read and articles you’ve skimmed through, everything feels different when you hold your newborn for the first time, and you’ll soon realize that parenthood is a job you learn on demand. That is not to say that there aren’t some essential things you need to prepare before your baby arrives! That’s why in this article we’ve put together some of the essential tasks you need to get done to prepare for life after baby arrives.

Create a list and a schedule

It is important to make use of the few weeks before the arrival of the baby to house proof and buy all the essential gear and accessories. A timely schedule is going to help you better understand the routine of your baby: you should create a schedule for feedings, naps, and diaper changes. Newborns need to eat every two to three hours. They also need to sleep a lot – usually 16 hours a day. Diaper changes should be done every two to three hours as well.

If you are formula feeding, you will need to buy formula and bottles. If you are breastfeeding, you will need a breast pump and storage bags for expressed milk. You will also need diapers, wipes, burp cloths (many of those!), changing tray, diaper pail, and baby bath. Make sure that all electrical outlets are covered, all poisonous chemicals are out of reach, and all small objects are picked up off the floor.

Essential baby gear

There are a few important items you'll need to pick up before the arrival of your newborn. These include:

-A car seat: You'll need a safe car seat that adheres by all the Safety Standards. It is also important to get the car seat with a newborn insert, and then transition into a normal car seat as your baby grows. Tip: look for a car seat that is easy to install and carry! Take it on a tour to make sure its comfortable for you.

-A stroller: A stroller is a baby must have. During the first weeks to months, you will have to use your bassinet with the stroller, and then as your baby grows you can transition them to a normal stroller seat. Look for one that's lightweight and easy to maneuver, and test drive it in the store!

-A baby carrier: A baby carrier will allow you to keep your hands free while you're carrying your baby. Look for one that's comfortable and ergonomic.

-A nursing pillow: A nursing pillow will help you comfortably nurse your baby. Look for one that's soft and supportive.

Putting together your baby nursery is a very exciting and fun experience! The essentials include a crib, dresser, changing table, diaper pail, and a glider for nursing or rocking the baby.  A baby monitor gives you an extra pair of eyes for when you are not in the same room with baby, while a sound machine can help your baby fall asleep faster and sleep longer.
